Yuna’s dates with Raphael Saadiq mark her highly anticipated return to the states. In February, she performed before a sold-out audience at the legendary venue, Mercury Lounge – her first ever show in New York City – and made her debut radio performance live on the influential radio station KEXP. Fans, critics from MTV, The New York Post, even Russell Simmons himself, who raved, “an amazing new singer…her music is incredible”, all instantly praised her talents. In March, during the annual SXSW Music and Film Conference in Austin, TX, she performed an intimate set at the MyMusicRX Brunch and shared the bill with Twin Shadow. That same week, Billboard Magazine tapped her to perform at their showcase at Buffalo Billiards.
“I remember the very first time I heard Yuna’s voice sing the opening lyric, ‘Is your favorite color blue?’ from the song ‘Deeper Conversation’,” said Rob Stone, co-founder of FADER Label. “I still hear it in my head the way I heard it that day. Her voice is uniquely exquisite, and she has a true talent that is beyond compare.”
Growing up in Malaysia, Yuna was first inspired by the universal appeal of acts like No Doubt, The Cranberries, and Fiona Apple. At the age of 19, while in law school, she picked up a guitar and began to write fervently. She joined various art groups and soon discovered her love and natural talents for sketching, fashion, photography, web design and graphic design. She took her passion for fashion to the next level when she became part owner of the clothing shop I Am Jet Fuel, a successful couture boutique in Malaysia. A self-professed “tech geek”, Yuna recently uploaded an instructional video showing viewers how to set up their own home recording studio.
Yuna’s hotly tipped US debut EP Decorate is out now digitally via FADER Label.
