Carrie Rodriguez Celebrates Upcoming Release in Hometown During SXSW

Singer/songwriter/fiddler Carrie Rodriguez previews new material from her forthcoming release in her hometown at the SXSW Music Conference March 17-21.

Over the years, as part of a duo (with Chip Taylor), a side-woman (with Alejandro Escovedo), and solo artist, Carrie Rodriguez has dazzled critics and audiences alike with her prowess as a musician and vocalist. And once again, Carrie delivers on her Ninth Street Opus debut, Love & Circumstance (due April 13, 2010), embracing twelve songs that have inspired, and influenced her life and music.

Produced by Lee Townsend (Bill Frisell, etc), Love & Circumstance was recorded with Hans Holzen (guitar), Kyle Kegerreis (bass) and Eric Platz (drums) and features musical contributions from Bill Frisell (guitars), Greg Leisz (pedal steel & slide guitars), Aoife O’Donovan (background vocals), and Buddy Miller (background vocals).

Carrie wraps herself around songs from influences and peers such as John Hiatt/Nick Lowe/Ry Cooder/Jim Keltner (aka Little Village), Buddy Miller & Julie Miller, David Rodriguez, Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, Richard Thompson, Townes Van Zandt, M. Ward, Merle Haggard & Bonnie Owens, Hank Williams, Lucinda Williams, and others. She even pays homage to her family heritage with the soulful Spanish ballad “”La Puñalada Trapera,” popularized in the 1950s by her great-aunt, famed Mexican bolero balladeer Eva Garza.

Carrie will perform at SXSW before embarking on her U.S. tour in support of Love & Circumstance beginning April 8th.

Pirate Love and the Slumber Blues

Norwegian psych garage rockers Pirate Love have more than just warm weather to be excited about when they come to the US next week. With shows in NYC, a new split 7” with Little Girls on Best of Both Records, and a slew of SXSW and post-SXSW shows confirmed, Pirate Love are all rev’d up to smother the US map.

Pirate Love barely have time to wipe the jetlag off their face before they kick things off with their SXSW send-off show in NYC at Santos Party House on March 15th. Presented by Oh My Rockness and Oya Festival, this show will feature Pirate Love playing alongside other viking bands such as 90s-esque indie rockers The Megaphonic Thrift, orchestral pop singer Hanne Hukkelberg, and dreampop buzz band The Depreciation Guild. Pirate Love go on at 9:30pm.

All while this is going on, Best of Both Records brings you the best of Toronto and Oslo independent music with a 7” split featuring Pirate Love’s “Space Doubt” and Little Girls “///////”. The 7” will be officially released at SXSW. The beauty of this project is that these tracks have never been released before and are exclusive to this 7” vinyl. Only 250 copies will be pressed.

If 7” vinyl are your thing, then you’ll also be pleased to hear that Kong Tiki Records will be adding to the 7” craze and releasing a purple Pirate Love 7” vinyl exclusively available at SXSW, as well. Limited edition and merlot-tinted, this 7” vinyl will feature “Sick of You” and “A Kiss Hello” off of their 2008 LP Black Vodoun Space Blues.

After wrapping up their US tour, the band will be returning to Norway and preparing to record their second album in August 2010 with Gordon Raphael (The Strokes’ Is This It and Room On Fire) as producer.

Pomegranates Sign to Afternoon Records

Afternoon Records is extremely proud to welcome Pomegranates to the family. Stay tuned for their third LP, which will be released in the Fall of 2010.

The album will follow their debut “Everything Is Alive”, and their follow-up “Everybody, Come Outside!”. The quartet will be entering the studio later this Spring to record.

To be honest with you I don’t care about labels, at least not consciously. So I’m giving you that purely for news. I’ve written about the Pomegranates before so be sure to click the tag for other material. Plain and simple, if you like melodic and energetic music then give them a listen and find them at SXSW for sure. They’ll be sure to provide you with indie-art-pop friendly music, no doubt.

(Los Angeles, CA) OK Go, the band whose inventive internet campaigns and self-directed music videos have set records and won the band a GRAMMY®, announces the formation of Paracadute. Paracadute and OK Go will oversee the distribution and promotion functions for the band and have planned an extensive promotional campaign for OK Go’s latest album, Of The Blue Colour Of The Sky, which was released in January. Just as the band saw an opportunity to do something different with their homemade videos, OK Go see untapped potential in the sea change that the music industry is experiencing and believe there are tremendous opportunities for artists capable of managing their own promotion and distribution. The band, who have always controlled their publishing, merchandise, touring, and all other non-recording rights, are parting by mutual agreement with EMI Music.

“We’d like to thank the people who have worked so hard on our behalf,” said OK Go singer Damian Kulash, who will discuss the band’s departure from the label on NPR’s “All Things Considered” today. “And we’d like to thank our fans for making this choice an easy one for us.”

The agreement will be effective April 1st. Without missing a beat, OK Go will perform on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” that evening and launch a North American tour on April 13th, which will include stops at numerous music festivals, including Bamboozle, Bonnaroo and Sasquatch. With its April 30th show at Brooklyn’s Music Hall of Williamsburg already sold out, OK Go has added another date at the venue – April 29th. (See below for tour itinerary.) The band will appear on “Late Show with David Letterman” on April 28th, “The Colbert Report” on April 29th and “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” on May 4th.

OK Go unveiled its latest crazily ambitious clip – the video for current single “This Too Shall Pass,” which features a two-story Rube Goldberg machine built by the band and Syyn Labs, a team of creative engineers with day jobs at NASA and Jet Propulsion Laboratory – last Monday and it garnered over six million views in the first six days, becoming the #1 Top Rated (All Time) music video on YouTube and going to #1 on the Viral Video charts, Reddit and Digg. Kulash has been asked to participate in the “How to Create a Viral Video” panel taking place at SXSW this Saturday, March 13th. He and bassist Tim Nordwind with Syyn Labs will discuss the new clip on “Last Call with Carson Daly” on Tuesday, March 16th.

The band hosted bi-coastal celebrations of the video’s release, with 100 contest winners joining Kulash for a Q&A session in New York City immediately after the premiere. Fans could also join the live chat online via Ustream. Last Friday, OK Go screened the video and performed a special acoustic set at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art for members of LACMA, MUSE and Syyn Labs. The event was a benefit for LACMA MUSE.

Out of New York… The Golden Filter

After a string of widely-circulated singles and remixes, New York-based duo The Golden Filter will release their debut album, Voluspa, in the US on June 15th, following its UK release on Brille Records (The Knife, Operator Please) in April.

On the long road home after a round-the-world tour, Penelope and Stephen returned to New York City to self-produce their debut album which casts glimpses into their unearthly world where goddesses, love, myths and mountains reign. With drum circles, string sections, field recordings, and lots of microphones, they’ve gone beyond disco to unveil where their secrets are shared and where their mystery dissolves…

Lead single “Hide Me” is currently available to download for free from the The Golden Filter’s website and will be released April 27th. It includes Peter Bjorn & John’s Hortlax Cobra, and Clock Opera remixes.

Who are Matt & Kim?

Bah, what do you mean who are they? How can you not know who Matt & Kim are!?

Matt & Kim will be playing a show at the University of Delaware in a couple of weeks and I bought tickets for Brian and I to take the boys to see them. This will be Finn’s 1st concert and since it is at the Bob it will be a smaller venue for him to start out at (This event is being held in Trabant Center Multipurpose Rooms). He’s a little late in comparison to Brae who saw his first concert at the age of 8 months and Finn will be 10 months old. =o)

Anyway, Matt & Kim remained on the quite side of the indie scene for I don’t know like four years and then they hit mainstream very quickly with their track “Daylight.” But all of their music is fabtastic and I think you’ll agree once you hear more of it.

You all should know by now that I love music which can make me more than just sing along. I mean I want to start moving and dancing and tapping. There is more to music than just the lyrics people! Don’t get me wrong, I love the lyrics but Matt & Kim have infectious music beyond just the words.

Charming. Yes, that’s it, they are charming. They may have struck musical gold with “Daylight” but tracks like “It’s A Fact” which are a little bit more edgy are just as good in my opinion albeit you can tell it is from their earlier years. If anyone is missing the days when albums did not have any fillers and bands actually had exceptional talent, then go ahead and look up Matt & Kim and buy their music!

Tee Pee Records SXSW Events

2010 will be Tee Pee Records biggest year at SXSW yet! On Thursday, March 18th their official showcase at Habana Calle 6 will be ready to blast ear drums for miles. The showcase will feature 12 Tee Pee bands on two stages. Saturday, March 20th at Red 7 Tee Pee will team up with Brooklyn Vegan, Chronic Youth and Converse to present “ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT”. The free show will pair some of the greats in hip hop with brutal hardcore, all while a riff-stravaganza destroys the other stage.

Good Old War Trio from Philly are heading to SXSW

It’s important you know while I listen to anything by Good Old War I am envisioning myself skipping through a field with daisies in my hair. This is music to turn up real loud (and I do, even in the office..one of the perks of having an artsy type job). It’s also important you know I should have all pencils removed from reach while listening to the trio, because I pick them up and start drumming and tapping and waving my arms around like their wings…yeah, the music is THAT good.

Indie rock trio GOOD OLD WAR will release their self-titled second album June 1st on Sargent House. The band will play several weeks of dates supporting Circa Survive, beginning March 11th in Carrboro, North Carolina and wrapping up March 24th in Cleveland, OH. Along the way the band will stop off in Austin, TX for three performances at the SXSW Music Conference. They will appear at the Bamboozle festival in New Jersey in May.

GOOD OLD WAR’s sophomore release is the result of several winter months spent holed up in a remote house in the Pocono Mountains, where band mates Keith Goodwin, Dan Schwartz and Tim Arnold crafted this earnest, original collection of songs in near-isolation. The album explores weightier topics such as love, loss and addiction, and the band experimented with new instruments, techniques and conventions to push the boundaries of their familiar indie rock/folk territory.

Since their conception two years ago, GOOD OLD WAR has shared the stage with The Gaslight Anthem, Heartless Bastards, Anthony Green, RX Bandits and The Honorary Title. Their single “Coney Island” enjoyed Triple-A airplay and the video was in heavy rotation on MTVu.
