The Heartbreaks Release Special Christmas Cover Song

theheartbreaksThe Heartbreaks round off an excellent 2012 with a very special Christmas cover song ‘Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)’. The band are offering this to fans as a free download which you can check out here:

Still riding high from this year’s highy praised LP “Funtimes”, the band are set to release a brand new EP, ‘Hand On Heart’, on February 4th. The Heartbreaks latest offering is out February 4th and features a selection of newly recorded material with strings arranged by the legendary James Banbury of The Auteurs (U2, Depeche Mode, Bloc Party etc.)

Matthew, vocalist of The Heartbreaks explains the motive of the new release, “We’ve always had a kind of intrinsic sense of drama, but with the addition of strings we were able to truly articulate a feeling of being widescreen, cinematic. Rather than merely ‘sounding big’, we wanted to make music that, like those great Scott Walker, REM and Bunnymen records, was melodic, bold, elegiac… Something conceptual that would, even if just for an EP, take our music beyond its usual guitar and bass sound”.

James Branbury, who himself as part of The Auteurs in 1993 released the seminal ‘Live Acoustic EP’ speaks of the new version of ‘Hand Of Heart’, “A great, emotional song. The build at the end is a tingling moment – always a good reaction when you’re working on a track and hearing it over and over again.

Having toured the UK in support of their debut album, ‘Funtimes’, hit a number of summer festivals, and played a series of hysterically received shows in Japan, following a number one airplay single in ‘Delay, Delay’, the Morecambe four piece will be heading back to Japan in December for more live dates, before heading to Europe early in 2013.

Download Jon DeRosa’s Cover Of ‘O Holy Night’

Jon DeRosa is releasing his beautiful version of ‘O Holy Night‘ today December 11th. Performed solo on the ukelele, ‘O Holy Night’ is sure to get you in the spirit of the holidays!

For those of you in New York – DeRosa is headlining the Mother West’s Holiday Extravaganza. The free show is at The Bowery Electric on the 12/18 and features some of the latest and greatest artists from the Mother West’s roster. He’s also playing The Mercury Lounge with Jack Lukeman on 01/13 – you can buy tickets here!

In 2011, DeRosa unveiled his first eponymous release, the Anchored EP. Novelist Ed Park (The Believer) said of it: “At first, Jon DeRosa’s Anchored EP, a quartet of gorgeously layered chamber-pop shanties, seems leagues away from the voluptuous Lovecraftian drift he perfected under his moniker Aarktica. But there are dark spaces here, too, room to brood in the sweet gravel of his voice, in Julia Kent’s penetrating cello lines, and in the quiet violence of the lyrics. With a depth that belies its brief running time, Anchored is so perfect that it literally gives you the chills.”

In April 2012, DeRosa self released a limited vinyl edition of his debut full length A Wolf In Preacher’s Clothes in the US, and on November 5/6 2012 DeRosa will release the album on CD internationally via RocketGirl Records.

Are you in a holidaze? New song by Starlings, TN

“I wanted to write a Christmas song that was closer to what I think the holidays are for a lot of people,” says Steven Stubblefield, the man behind Austin’s Starlings, TN. That song, “The Holidaze,” now available for download, was directly inspired by a review by journalist John Book of the current Starlings, TN album Heartache In 4/4 Time which appeared earlier in the year on Book’s blog This Is Book’s Music.

“I started writing the song about the time the review came out,” says Stubblefield. “I remember vividly thinking that dry socks, smokes, and a bottle of whiskey would be a hell of a Christmas gift.” Taking things full circle, “The Holidaze” made its debut today on Book’s website and is reviewed here.

“This song is set during the holidays, in and around a dysfunctional family, and you are getting to look at this family as if you’re a fly on the wall,” Stubblefield explains of the song. “There is a lot of holiday music I can’t stand. All that happy, cheery music is like nails on a chalkboard for me. I think for a lot of us, the holiday season is overbearing and intense, so I wanted to pen something real.”

Toys for Tots, option to donate to Children Affected by Hurricane Sandy

Tis the season for giving.

Your family may not be able to give and if that is the case it is completely understandable. Times are tough for a lot of people right now. But if you do have an extra $5 or $10 to donate to Toys for Tots right now it would help make the holidays extra magical for many children.

A message from the folks at Toys for Tots:

We are all witness to the devastation Hurricane Sandy created in New York, New Jersey and parts of several other states.  Fortunately, we have the Red Cross and other agencies that are providing the shelter, medicine, clothing, food and supplies that the people of those states critically need.

Now that the immediate needs of these families are being met, the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation has begun making plans to help fulfill the Christmas dreams for the displaced children of that region.  Last year we provided gifts to over 500,000 children in those areas, but unfortunately, we still ran out of gifts long before we ran out of children.

This year, because of Hurricane Sandy and its destruction, there will be even more desperate parents trying to determine how to provide Christmas gifts for their children.  We intend to be there for these unfortunate families.  You might say that toys are nonessentials.  You’re right, but why should the children who just lost everything have to lose their hope and belief in Santa as well!

On the Toys for Tots website there is a special donation button meant for just the families impacted by Hurricane Sandy.

Something important to know about Toys for Tots … 97% of your donation goes to our mission of providing toys, books and other gifts to less fortunate children.  The 3% spent on support principally covers fundraising expenses – not one donated dollar goes to pay for salaries or any other manpower costs.
