Shy of Perfect jewelry giveaway!!!

Time for something fun on Scrink. We’re hosting a giveaway thanks to the creative brain of Sara from Shy of Perfect. She has her own site and Etsy shop where she write and creates beautiful jewelry pieces. Thanks to a generous offer, she is allowing me to host a giveaway of one of her necklace/earring sets.

All you need to do to be able to enter is head on over to her Etsy shop and let me know in the comments what your favorite jewelry set is from her items. I really like the set you see pictured here, but you can pick anything! Who wouldn’t want to win a new jewelry set to wear during any upcoming holiday parties or even just to wear to work to feel a little extra dolled up?

I was lucky enough to win a gorgeous set from Shy of Perfect over the summer. I wear the earrings all the time, they are white drop earrings and they make me feel extra girly when I need to look a bit more sophisticated for a meeting. And then when I know I’m going out to dinner I add the necklace. I’d wear it more often, but my youngest (Finn, age 2) likes to pull on necklaces.

Sara is such a sweetheart and she is always adding new materials and designs to her shop. She says she creates, “Modern designs for both kids and moms. These pieces are meant to be affordable, modern, and easy to wear.” Creating jewelry is a “a very fun and therapuetic hobby” for her.

If you’d like to read her blog you can check it out here. Recently she wrote about how you can recycle a crib into a desk or workbench which is a fantastic idea for those of us who have upgraded our kids to a toddler or twin bed and we can’t give our “slide rail” beds to Good Will because they have been “out lawed.” Sara’s “Shy of Perfect” blog is simply full of great ideas!

Rules of the Giveaway: – There are five ways to enter this giveaway! It ends on September 24, 2011 at noon EST. The winner will be chosen by random from the comments using random.org.

Add unique and vintage flair to your hair and your wardrobe

Even as I begin writing this post it is still not clear to me why I feel so compelled to tell you about this product. But I just stumbled upon it today, this very morning, and I’m giddy! All for headbands!

Sorry guys, I digress, I have my girl moments for sure.

Okay so Specifically Random is a store on Etsy which specializes in the making and selling of headbands. It is odd that I’m so excited about these, because headbands and I don’t get along normally. I’m guessing I have an alien shaped head. I mean headbands of this nature normally pop off the back of my head at some point of the day. They slide up the back of my dome and further mess up the hair I was trying to hide in the first place. Do you know what I’m talking about?

However, THESE headbands come sized to fit even my alien shaped head. And for me that is pretty giddy special.

In particular, I love the Black Paisley Head Scarf in her shop. The headband details say, “This headband style is great for girls with lots of hair, as it will securely hold back any fly-aways without binding behind the ears. It’s equally flattering for those with thin hair or hair loss when worn at the hair line.”

So, a little bit about Kelly, the owner of Specifically Random. Her Etsy profile says she is from Indianapolis. She loves being crafty, finding new fabrics for her collection or vintage treasures that she salvages during shopping trips and she even has a hobby in making jewelry, which you can find at her other shop Randomly Specific.

P.S. Be sure to scout out the Suit and Tie Headband while you’re looking, it’s super cute! Fashionable and functional!

Resolving to organize your spaces

For the new year many people choose to come up with resolutions for themselves. They decide on things they wish to change for the new year or things they wish to improve. I think the New Year’s resolution I hear most often is the one to stay fit or lose weight. I also believe that is the one people give up on by the end of January. So while I do intend to become more fit this year, I’m going to try and stay more organized as my main goal. I think this is a more conceivable resolution for me and I’ll be satisfied with the results in the end, as will my family. Right?

First is first, you can search around online for ideas, watch HGTV or grab some books to help you mentally prepare for the task of getting yourself and your items together. Here is a link to The Top Books on Organizing Space.

In your child’s space there are a million and a half ways to keep things organized. You’ll want to think about tiers, because there are some things you might want to keep out of reach when you are not in the room just so tornadoes don’t hit every day. So you might want to have higher shelves. And then there are toys which will fit in small spaces and can sit in cubes. Or there was bigger toys which might need toy boxes. You see what I mean?

The cute thumbnail photo you see is of Little Cube Friends which vary in size from 8-12″ in height. What holds them all together as a family are their pocket mouths that can be used to store your treasures or hide your secrets. If you sit one on your desk it can hold envelopes or pencils. I’m sure your little one can find uses for it that you couldn’t even imagine.

One of the more difficult rooms to organize in a fashionable way is the bathroom. It’s a small space, the items you store in a bathroom are not always pretty and well, that’s pretty much it. But you can get a spice rack and put it in your bath room! Just don’t use it as a spice rack. The thumbnail photo here shows a 3 hook spice rack has hooks, you can hang your bathrobe or towels. You can put your bath salts or body sprays on it. And it comes with a mason jar for you to put flowers or perhaps those cool little marble things that people normally put in aquariums, you know what I’m talking about? Anything that fits your color scheme and helps get items off the sink area while keeping room under the sink for the items that aren’t so pretty. Right?

Most families spend the vast majority of their time together in the living room. Small bowls and containers are your friends. The more loose items you have on surfaces, the more will gather there. Contain, contain, contain! And then there is the brilliant Storage Ottoman. Adults can put their feet up and blankets or toys or pillows can be stored out of sight, but not far from reach. Genius! Or mayhaps a Khaki colored storage bench which also could serve as an ottoman in a less bulky way.

2010 Scrink Bring Me Up Gift Guide

Is it contradictory to want radio stations to hold off on the holiday music until after Thanksgiving, while I begin preparing gift guide postings?

Truth be told I have bought a small number of gifts for the boys already, but literally have only spent $20 so far. The budget is very tight this year and I do fully intend on being one of the crazy people awake at the crack of dawn and in the chaotic crowds of toy stores on Black Friday. A mom has got to do what a mom has got to do. This year I finally get it. :)

Let’s talk gifts!

What I have gotten so far for the boys has been Toy Story related. The funny thing is we haven’t even watched Toy Story 3 yet and I don’t think Finnegan has seen Toy Story at all. But he won’t sit to watch anything for more than 10 minutes at a time anyway. He just likes the noises and bright colors. Braeden does like Toy Story, because many little boys like space and cowboys, right? Can’t go wrong. KMart (as well as many other places) are all about promotion Toy Story right now. KMart just happens to be one of the more affordable ones.

To infinity and beyond! Now you can fly away with the original Space Ranger in the Toy Story Buzz Lightyear Spaceship. Ride along with your co-pilot Buzz to try to get back to Andy’s room as you strap on your inflatable backpack. ($40)

Toy Story 3 Pizza Planet Rocket R/C Radio Control Vehicle. (for only $18)

I for one wish they had a Toy Story Toy Adventure Hut for Grown Ups, although I am sure it would have to be wider, my baside is much bigger than youth sized…. ($30)

You’ll find, if you haven’t noticed already, I love Etsy. And so much of the gifts I’ll steer you to will be from there. No one asked me to write about them, I just genuinely like them.

Like this adorable, magical “Evelyn pocket mirror” by Marisol Spoon. Comes enclosed in a bubble mailer with a pretty little organza bag and gift tag..perfect for gifting! Aside for pocket mirrors, which are $7, they also sell premium matte prints and stationery sets of their artwork. Marisol Spoon are a wife and husband artist team. They are from the beautiful Appalachian mountains.

“Nature’s enchantment, vintage aesthetics, off beat tales, and classical painting are some of our inspirations.”

What a great idea is a Family Tree plate? I see people hang plates on their walls all the time? My Mom has an antique butterfly plate which she adores and while I’m glad it makes her happy I don’t really get it. But a Family Tree plate seems like a great idea and I think it would also make a wonderful gift. Pending you don’t have a HUGE family. That could get crazy! This Family Tree Plate comes from cherman47 on Etsy. She says, “I am a busy working mother of two children and I just love to be creative and share my creativeness with others. I have always been interested in the arts and anything artistic just fascinates me and it is my passion and first true love.” Each plate is individually hand painted so every one is unique. The 10.5″ plates cost is $30.

For the man in your life who is forced to wear a tie, but would still like to maintain his awesome rugged flair of being sexy smart there is the Smart Steampunk Tie Clip by Steampunktitis (STEAMPUNK IT IS). This fantastic steampunk tie clip was fashioned with an awesome, vintage, Swiss made, 15 Ruby jeweled watch movement. I love this shop, they have the coolest, most unique accessories for men and women, but I especially like the cuff-links and tie clips they have for men. Gals, look at their Neo Victorian Gemstone Earrings with the dragonflies, gorgeous!

My mother-in-law bought me this cool origami book right around Halloween and it taught you how to make Halloween themed origami. It ended up being a bit too advanced for my big clumsy hands, but it definitely piqued my curiosity and now all things origami intrigue me. I have found silk origami barrettes and have thought they are just beautiful. So when I saw this book at Barnes & Noble I just thought it was a fantastic idea. Make your own jewelry origami for under $22.

Okay, so this one you’d have to pre-order but you’ll get it in time for Christmas, promised. Hop over to Amazon and buy it for your Mom, girlfriend, wife or really anyone who likes yoga or pilates because it is just for them. New U Fitness First Yoga and Pilates comes with 120 Standard Exercises, 6 work out locations and is compatible with Wii Balance Board & Wii Motion Plus. It’s only $28.99!

Know any coffee lovers who would also love to help a good cause? This budget friendly gift is $12 and Starbucks has partnered with (PRODUCT) RED™ to give 1.00 to the Global Fund every time you buy a pound of (STARBUCKS)RED coffee.

Or mayhaps you know someone who isn’t so much into coffee but they work in a cold office space and love tea. They would probably LOVE an electric tea kettle, right?

Hair pins and owl embroidery

Hello beautifully dark blue bobby pins. Oh how I love bobby pins for my hair, even though they never stay in and usually take strands of my hair with them when they fall out.

Twilight Shade’s Shop on Etsy has gorgeous jewelry, but they also have many trio selections of handmade bobby pin jewels for your hair. You can get a set of three for $15 which is a great price when you see how unique and fantastic the pins look. They add a bit of glam to pretty much anything you wear.

“Who could resist such a deep midnight blue! These are a treat to behold. A lush blue vintage glass cabochon is set into an antique brass frame, then attached to the 2 inch bobby pin.”

For an owl selection I stumbled across this adorable owl iPod or iTouch carrying case. So you can keep your expensive gadget free of grime and scratches while also having it all dressed up in wool felt fabric and 100% hand embroidery.

You can find many other owl themed items at EvelynX’s Shop on Etsy. Evelyn is working towards her BFA in Pictorial Arts out in California. Crafting cute owls is a part-time gig for her when she’s not cramming.
