Twin Shadow remix The Pains of Being Pure at Heart

Twin Shadow transmits suburban ghost dreams that sound like a slow motion shot of a cannon, singing about spirits, visions, and aural hallucinations cutting through the first American night. It makes sense they would throw themselves into remix to one of The Pains of Being Pure of Heart’s tracks.

Earlier this year, New York’s The Pains of Being Pure at Heart released “Belong”, their gorgeously yearning, sophomore album, winning plaudits on both sides of the pond (Pitchfork, Rolling Stone and Spin in the US, Mojo, Drowned in Sound and Loud and Quiet, among others, in the UK), even appearing on David Letterman to perform first single, “Heart In Your Heartbreak.” Subsequent sold-out headline shows in the US and the UK further confirmed the band’s steady ascent. Check out this latest remix of the track by Twin Shadow here.

Love me some Lenka on this #musicmonday @lenka

Australian singer-songwriter Lenka will be previewing songs from her upcoming album, Two, in four appearances at SXSW and a short U.S tour leading up to the album’s release. The West Coast run – which also features Greg Laswell – launches April 1st at San Francisco’s Rickshaw Stop and will include a show at Los Angeles’ legendary Troubadour on April 13th. See below for itinerary. Lenka will perform on ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on Wednesday, April 20th.

Two, set for release on April 19th by Epic Records, is the follow-up to Lenka’s self-titled debut album, which entered at #3 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart in late 2008 and contained “The Show,” which became a No. 1 single at radio in several countries. Lenka recorded much of Two with producer David Kosten (Bat for Lashes), working at Ray Davies’ Konk Studios in North London. She also recorded with Eg White (Adele), Sunny Levine (Pete Yorn, Happy Mondays), Ben Allen (Animal Collective, Gnarls Barkley) and Guy Sigsworth (Björk, Seal).

Sigsworth produced three songs, including the lead single, “Heart Skips a Beat.” Lenka gives fans a surrealistic look at the anatomy of love in the video for “Heart Skips a Beat” which will premiere shortly. The clip was lensed by Sarah Chatfield (Lily Allen, Craig David).

“Everything At Once,” another track from Two, was recently heard on “Grey’s Anatomy” and is tapped by Disney for a DVD trailer promoting its upcoming blockbuster films while “Here To Stay” was used in a recent episode of “Nikita.”

Lenka’s debut album was widely licensed for television, including such shows as “Ugly Betty,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Parenthood,” “Easy A,” “90210” and “The Hills,” the film Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging, advertising campaigns for Old Navy, Coca-Cola, Apple and Nordstrom plus the trailers for Marley & Me and Confessions of a Shopaholic. Spin marveled at her “cashmere soft voice” and VH1 named her a “You Oughta Know” artist. She toured extensively behind her debut album, hitting 21 countries in 10 months, and appearing on numerous televisions shows – including “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,””Late Night with Conan O’Brien.” “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” and “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”

Sarabeth Tucek’s ‘Get Well Soon’ is a definite remedy #musicmonday

Further showing how true talent should be defined, Sarabeth Tucek takes fans through one of the most emotional times of her life with lyrics. She sets them to music in a beautifully raw and splendid way. In an age where artists often stack a record with the best 3 or 4 tracks up front, often followed by filler material, Sarabeth Tucek’s is putting forth a second album to buck the system.

Sarabeth Tucek releases her second album, ‘Get Well Soon’, via Sonic Cathedral Recordings on April 4. It will be available on limited-edition heavyweight vinyl, CD and as a download.

It’s a stunning record that, although not a concept album as such, forms a narrative based around the death of Sarabeth’s father, or as she beautifully describes it “an impressionistic rendering of a time ruled by grief”. The 12 tracks were “sequenced and resequenced for weeks” in order for the story to emerge and the end result sees not one wasted word or unnecessary note; all we’re left with is “just pure feeling”.

1. The Wound And The Bow
2. Wooden
3. A View
4. The Fireman
5. Smile For No One
6. Things Left Behind
7. State I Am In
8. At The Bar
9. Rising
10. The Doctor
11. Exit Ghost
12. Get Well Soon

To be all he needs

Could this be the longest day in history?

I know it’s not in the mathematical sense, but in the feeling very long right now sense, it definitely feels as though this Monday could be the longest day ever.

And so I’m going to be an unorganized mess.

But here are things you should know and hear on this Music Monday.

After over a year in the making, I am one of the many people proud to announce the Digital Release of Brett Ryan Stewart’s 2nd full-length Studio album, “Tilt“. Brett came through many trials while developing this album. He says, “After many months of struggling to just simply “get my life back”, I reached a turning point. The overwhelming fear of life that had been crippling me was beginning to transition into a childlike curiosity, something I’d lost a long time before amidst my cynicism and angst. I now saw the world, or more precisely, Existence altogether, with new eyes. I realized I no longer wanted that old life back. Without knowing it, I’d already been set out on a journey, towards peace of mind, self-actualization, and Truth. This rebirth of sorts is what I now refer to as “the tilt”.”

I’ve been following Brett for a couple of years now and this album is his most heavily produced, but it’s also the most lyrically raw album. In terms of the sound I think each track has a different vibe. If you listen to Monster and then flow into Bend it’s like hearing two different albums musically. He has grouped an eclectic array of musical ideas in “Tilt” and that’s probably because he was going through a myriad of feelings while developing the album.

Other songs I’m listening to today include tracks from Parachute and Matt Nathanson…

And if you want to grab a track from Matt Nathanson to keep for this Music Monday then give this one a try:

Francisco the Man, yes, Zack Orr is the man #musicmonday

“Francisco the Man” has been nominated for Concept Album of the Year for the 10th Independent Music Awards (IMAs), an influential awards program for independent music. Representing the broad spectrum of today’s global independent music scene, nominees were culled from submissions from North America, South America, Asia, Australia and Europe.

The best part about all that international awesomeness is that Zack Orr is from Pennsylvania! So he is local to me and it makes me so proud when I find artists who are so fantastic I squeal out loud when I hear their work (or see their work depending on the medium).

Since those hermitic “cottage days” in Pennsylvania, Orr has recorded pieces of Francisco the Man at home studios in Boston and Portland, Oregon. Using the experience gained during the making of his first record, The Unstoppable Lift, Zack has recorded and mixed the entire Francisco the Man album himself.

Boasting lush vocal harmonies, memorable melodies, and sounds recorded in nature alongside electronic beats, this innovative self-produced/recorded album, “Francisco the Man,” features 12-tracks, complicated, and original concept album plays through the four seasons and all 12 months – in 12 keys.

“While writing these songs I recorded natural sound from every season. Leaves, ice, water, birds, fireworks, wind in a fireplace…it’s all in there, but sometimes it’s pretty mangled. Sound can trigger emotions and memories. I want the audience to really feel summer, or fall.”

A Valentine from White Snake on a Music Monday #musicmonday

Just in time for Valentine’s Day: the perfect blend of rock and romance. Whitesnake has partnered with VEVO for the world premiere of the brand new video “Love Will Set You Free.” As of today, Monday, February 14th, the video can be viewed on VEVO within the U.S. and Canada. International fans can see it here. Directed by Devin DeHaven/Fortress Entertainment (Papa Roach, Method Man, Talib Kweli), the video was shot in Lake Tahoe, NV.

“Love Will Set You Free” is the first single from the forthcoming Whitesnake album, Forevermore, due out on March 29th in North America and March 25th in Europe. The digital album is available for pre-order today via Whitesnake.com and includes an instant track download of “Love Will Set You Free.” Pre-order of the album, as well as the single for “Love Will Set You Free”, will be made available at all digital stores on February 21st.

Forevermore finds founder/singer/songwriter David Coverdale and company returning to their no-holds-barred, bluesiest, sexiest rock n’ roll roots. This will be Whitesnake’s 11th album and the first release via the Italian-based Frontiers Records label. Forevermore was recorded, produced and mixed by Los Bros Brutalos (Coverdale, Doug Aldrich and Michael McIntyre) at Snakebyte Studios and Grumblenott Studios & Villas in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, with additional work at Casa Dala, Sherman Oaks, CA.

Formed in 1977, and steered by the legendary David Coverdale, Whitesnake carry a rightful reputation as one of the world’s leading rock n’ roll bands. Coverdale’s blues roots, combined with a feral sense of rockin’ and rollin’, have consistently shaped the ‘Snake’s sound along with Coverdale’s love and appreciation of impeccable musicianship. Whitesnake’s ascent to the very top of the rock n’ roll heap was confirmed with 1987’s self-titled mega-platinum album, which saw two massive Top 10 hits, two #1 singles with “Here I Go Again” and “Is This Love” and a virtual 24-hour domination of MTV around the world. Whitesnake is David Coverdale (vocals), Doug Aldrich (guitars), Reb Beach (guitars), Michael Devin (bass) and Briian Tichy (drums).

Shelf Life of Pet Ghost Project #musicmonday

Brooklyn’s Pet Ghost Project will be self-releasing their 6th album “Shelf Life” Feb 15th, 2011.

Justin Stivers is obsessed with time. Why wouldn’t he be? After all, time ran out on his label deal and with his band members. And time is running out on him in Brooklyn.

Enter Shelf Life. The album where Justin attempts to stop the clock, or at least slow it down, in an effort to extend the life of Pet Ghost Project, the band synonymous with his name. Stivers sacrificed health, loved ones, the comfort of a bed (Stivers in fact slept on the floor of his studio for over a year), and financial stability to make this record. All was compromised to make an uncompromising work.

With Shelf Life, a new side of Pet Ghost Project is exposed. For the first time in the seven year history of the band, Stivers found a true collaborating partner in Justin Gonzales. With the help of a few other Brooklyn multi-instrumentalists, the pair crafted an album that is more urgent and mature than anything Pet Ghost Project has released to date. These songs hit you with equal parts noise, texture, ambience, and unexpected left turns, all while remaining highly melodic and memorable.

The album digs deep into struggles with loneliness, poverty, and crushing realities. There is no obvious happy ending to the story told with Shelf Life, as Stivers & Gonzales promise to never write another song. It’s unclear whether Pet Ghost Project will make good on that promise. Only time will tell.
