Scooby Doo AND KISS Mystery Giveaway #ScoobyDoo

scoobydoo-kissMy husband is a huge KISS fan. I’ve been to a concert with him to see them and he has been to like 30 of their concerts. So when we bought the Scooby-Doo tv-episode which included music from KISS complete with KISS cartoon characters taking stage, he was quite amused. My kids just wanted to know what all the makeup was about. Scooby-Doo being Halloween-ish, meant for an easy explanation.  The weird band makeup is because they are in “character” but the movie was good. The kids love mysteries. I like the crop circle angle in this episode and we were all curious to see how the fire breathing ghosts panned out. I’ll always prefer the Scooby shows of the 70s though. Although I admit I’m okay with the Scooby Gang hanging around for my kids to enjoy.

Cool Ghouls sounds like a Scooby Doo episode

But it’s not. The Cool Ghouls include Pat Thomas, Ryan Wong, Pat McDonald, Alex Fleshman and they are affiliated with a variety of different record labels including: Empty Cellar, Burger Records, Under the Gun, Hair Growth. This coming August they will be one of many bands to perform at the First City Festival in Monterey, California along with the likes of Dawes, Miniature Tigers and The National to name a few.

tumblr_n544gyFzbm1ru8auqo1_400They recently did a session with Daytrotter which you can find here.

Folks around the interwebs say Cool Ghouls are “A very sick, carefully crafted, pysch/rock band.” I’m not really sure what that means but I’m assuming it is a good thing since the band is known to “restore your faith in music.”

Needless to say I’m not sure that this band likes Scooby Doo but I can totally see the mystery gang making reference to their band’s name just for fun while rolling around town in their psychedelic van.

At the Hands of the Robber Barons #nowplaying

The Great American Robber BaronsI think I’ve said this before with other music and it’s a reflection on me and my life more than it is the music. However, the song “At the Hands of the Robber Barons” (which you can listen to now because it is embedded above the post title) reminds me of a track you would have, should have heard in one of the old Scooby Doo episodes from the 70s. I really can’t explain why I feel this way, but it probably has something to do with the fact that I love Scooby Doo and so do my kiddos. Sadly the new episodes are nowhere near as good as the oold ones, maybe that is because they’re not using music from The Great American Robber Barons.

It’s not insulting to say their music would rock out on Scooby Doo. I mean think about it. Cher had an episode, even The Monkees had a track in one of the chase scenes. There has been some supreme talent cheering on the mystery gang!

True fans of folk rock and guitar jangles will love the compositions. Fans of satire, politics and real-life will enjoy the lyrics. The Great American Robber Barons might not be what I would automatically tune into during my drive to work, but I’m really loving their music WHILE I’m working here in the office.

With Diana Mangano as lead and background vocals and Keith Dion as vocals, acoustic and electric guitar and bass, the duo offers a ton of energy and at times darkly cathartic lyrics. “I’ve been playing in bands for over 30 years,” Keith says pensively. “I’ve played with famous people, had record deals, but it took the death of my parents to start writing lyrics. It feels like some type of transcendental experience that made these songs come out. It’s been a wonderful revelation.”

Their new album “Reno Nevada… and Other Songs of Gambling, Vice and Betrayal” is available online at http://www.305am.com/#!music/c1x9v

Let me know what you think of their music!

Download a sweet design viewbook from the creators of ParaNorman

paranormanviewbookMy family and I went to see ParaNorman in 3D at the theater when it came out last August. My husband and I had been surprised at how scary the movie actually was as we watched.

Although news and blog reports said the movie was supposed to be more like Scooby-Doo than anything horror related. I think the only thing it has in common was the fact that the movie wasn’t real, it was animated. There were some very dark elements that I do not think the Scooby Gang would have investigated.

There is a witch in the movie who is really a young girl and she was burned at the stake as a child. That kind of storyline was something I didn’t expect from a movie I thought was geared for children. However, both boys liked the movie and I don’t think they really understood some of the deeper undertones so that is a blessing.

The movie is still the topic of talk even now that it has been out of theaters for five months. It has been the winner of 15 Best Animated Feature Film awards, winner of Character Animation & Design by the Annie Awards and now also nominated for an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, and a GLAAD Media Award, ParaNorman was made at the LAIKA Studios located in Oregon.

Over the two years of making the movie, a dedicated crew of over 320 talented animators, designers, artists, and technicians came together to hand-craft the year’s most original animated feature.

The creators of ParaNorman have released a really snazzy “viewbook” which shares their process and story of creation. You can download it in PDF format by clicking the image, it is a large file. If you want to view it online, click here.

Movie Synopsis:

“ParaNorman” is, following “Coraline,” the company’s second stop-motion animated feature to be made in 3D. In “ParaNorman,” a small town comes under siege by zombies. Who can it call? Only misunderstood local boy Norman (voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee), who is able to speak with the dead. In addition to the zombies, he’ll have to take on ghosts, witches and, worst, of all, grown-ups, to save his town from a centuries-old curse. But this young ghoul whisperer may find his paranormal activities pushed to their otherworldly limits.
