Weezer did what, are they Toto approved?

No, no, no I do not care about who put a hyphen in their name on their latest album. So I won’t be talking about Pusha-T, yeah, probably ever.

Yesterday, a friend of mine sent me a link which hella surprised me.

Are any of you psyched for the upcoming Weezer tour?

Also, what’s going on with all the covers? R.E.M., Oasis, Pixies and Smashing Pumpkins. And then the whole Africa craziness?

Yes, Weezer has covered Toto’s “Africa” song. This is after covering the song Rosanna, which they did as kind of a snarky way of responding to a Twitter “ask” for them to cover Africa. Well now we have TWO Toto covers from Weezer, so thank you to the Twittersphere for making that happen. Now don’t get me wrong, I love Toto and the original will always be best, but this is Weezer, they really did this, they gave into the fandom and blew up social media. The Africa video is now trending on YouTube in the top 25 spots, and in just three days, (as of this moment 11:18 a.m.) it has 2,757,893 views. Holy mackenzie!

By the way, for those interested, they’ll be in the Philly/Jersey area on Saturday, July 21, 2018 with the Pixies and Sleigh Bells.

So, how did it all happen, who is this Twitter fan?

Well, months ago a Twitter account—@WeezerAfrica, who, according to Noisey, is actually a 14-year-old teen named Mary—began trolling the band, begging them to cover Toto’s balmy ‘80s single “Africa.” I suppose this person figured Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo had been covering other artists while playing solo this Spring,  but I wonder why they went for one song in particular.

And then, to top it all off, Toto responded with approval!

It’s gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There’s nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had

You don’t want to miss Lyn Saga’s debut album ‘Venice’

lynsagaWith finger picked guitar and a Weezer-esque garage sound touched by slight elements reminiscent of 50s music, Lyn Saga offers suprisingly catchy music in a culture where most young female artists all have the same auto-tuned pop “stuff”.

How was that for a run-on opener to this post?

When asked, “How does your music separate yourself from other artists and bands out there?” Lyn responded, “My music is very personal and honest. I write lyrics based on my experiences or experiences of people who are close to me.” It’s true in terms of her lyrics and her talents because Lyn doesn’t just sing she is classically trained on the piano and plays guitar. Thanks to her skills she was able to work very closely with her producer while they created her first full length album Venice.

In truth, Lyn Saga offers a bouncy slice of pop-rock. If I had to try comparing her to someone in particular it would be a less dreamy and more raw sounding Rachel Haden. You can listen to “This Way” below to get an idea, I’d love to know what you think. I was given a chance to hear her entire upcoming album and it’s all equally impressive.

My favorite track is “Stay” and yes I do think it will be a ‘single worthy’ track on Venice. She shows reflection in her lyrics and a willingness to let loose and rock out in the music.

Pick up a copy of Lyn Saga’s Venice on January 13, 2013.

Weezer bus crash

Winter ice causes havoc on the road. Rivers Cuomo, the singer-guitarist for rock band Weezer, was hospitalized early Sunday morning after the group’s tour bus skidded off a frozen New York highway.

A bus carrying Rivers Cuomo, his family, and his assistants in upstate New York hit a patch of black ice and “[plunged] about 8-10 vertical feet into a muddy ravine off to the right of the Thruway.” Nobody was seriously injured, though one of Cuomo’s assistants “sustained two fractured ribs and a fractured lower vertebrae,” Cuomo himself “cracked three ribs and sustained some mostly minor but very painful internal damage,” and everyone was clearly shaken.

For now, tour dates are canceled with plans to reschedule at a later time.
