Will Smith is one of my most favorite actors of all time.
And so it would be wrong not to wish him a happy birthday and also not to share what his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, did to embarrass him on Facebook.
Ha. So adorable.
Alright so I openly admitted to not known what Gangham Style was or who Psy was.. apparently I had been living under a rock for quite some time. I had pregnancy brain and then was on maternity leave so I figure that is a decent excuse, right?
Spencer Graves, morning dj on 93.7 WSTW, tweeted about something called the “Harlem Shake” and therefore I knew I needed to immediately research. I can’t let another crazy dance pass me by! (Yes I know he was being sarcastic, he is ALWAYS sarcastic).
This is what I have found out…
So it all started by some guy named Bauuer. (What is up with these dude singer/dancer types who go by only one name, I always though only the GREATs could do that…like Prince, Madonna or Cher. Whatever.) Wait, wait, let’s go back, it really started the year I was born, 1981. A dance came to be and it was called the Harlem Shake because it originated in Harlem. The dance became mainstream in 2001 when G. Dep featured the Harlem shake in his music video “Let’s Get It“.
As far as I can tell the Harlem Shake is simply your body convulsing rapidly and it really doesn’t have to go along to a beat at all. You just have to shake, I mean totally ladies let the thigh fat jiggle because that is the dance. It’s not pretty.
So why has the Harlem Dance suddenly become popular again?
So who it this tall, slight fella with a boyish face and big, goofy smile. He was born in West Philadelphia. No no no, not Will Smith, although the Fresh Prince did have some CRAZY dance moves back in the day. Bauuer, he’s this string bean white guy hip hopper. Bauuer released his own Harlem Shake track as a free digital download by Mad Decent imprint label Jeffree’s on May 22, 2012. “I just had the idea of taking a Dutch house squeaky-high synth and putting it over a hip-hop track,” he says.
Bauuer had no idea his song was start an internet sensation, a new meme that would make Gangham Style a thing of the past. He references the UGA Men’s Swim & Dive team 30-second clip of guys killing the dance UNDER WATER! (You can view the video at the top of this post).
Whaaaaat!? The video has 21 million views at as of this moment and it was published on February 11, 2013. Awwww snap! Apparently Bauuer’s single started selling BECAUSE of this dance meme. People were getting it as a free download in May 2012 and now thanks to the response of the meme caused the song to reach number one on both the Billboard Hot 100 and Dance/Electronic Songs.
There you have it.
P.S. Turn any website into a Harlem Shaker site… www.hsmaker.com
Yes of course I own both Men in Black movies. I absolutely LOVE Will Smith. This is not a secret to anyone. I also very much like science fiction and fantasy so it helps the genre and one of my favorite actors are oh so lovingly combined in the Men In Black movies. ;) The big question here is how it will stand up against the block buster Avengers which began playing in theaters two weeks ago?
With a tagline like “They are back… in time.” You kind of get the impression this is Back to the Future-esque and it does seem to be that way from the movie synopsis which explains Agent J must save Agent K in the past so he will be there in the future. Josh Brolin plays the younger “Agent K” and we all know Tommy Lee Jones is the older “Agent K.”
Nerdist: No disrespect to Men in Black II, but MIB3 seems to make a much better connection with the first film than the second. Was that intentional?
Barry Sonnenfeld: Absolutely. We were trying to match more of the tone of the first than the second film. On that second film, we sort of forgot a few things. The second film, I think, tried a little too hard for “comedy” and also the first and third films have very strong villains. The second film, although Johnny Knoxville and Laura Flynn Boyle are funny, they’re not really quite strong enough to make your heroes be heroic. I think we learnt our lessons and went back tonally to the first film.
Enter before June 1st, 2012
Dunkin Donuts is doing some marketing for MIB3. They have face time in the MIB3 mobile app and they are touting their new Black Cocoa Crème Iced Coffee as the perfect drink to have nearby while watching the movie this weekend. There is also a new “Undercover Black Cocoa Donut” to try out.
Sony Pictures Entertainment confirmed that six minutes of the highly anticipated film The Amazing Spider-Man™ will be shown in IMAX® 3D and other select theaters with Men In Black™ 3. Many reasons to check it our this weekend, even if you’re not a diehard Will Smith fan which truthfully I cannot possibly imagine.
Even Hollywood box office king, Will Smith, is getting on the bandwagon. Apart from working on Men In Black 3, he is set to also do a The Legend of Cain and is even producing the said movie along with Overbrook Entertainment partners Jada Pinkett Smith (his wife), James Lassiter, and Ken Stovitz. The script was written by Caleeb Pinkett and Dan Knauf, with Andrea Berloff revising.
The story of Cain is based on the Bible with Will Smith playing the title role of Cain, the world’s first original “bad boy” as the press releases are saying. But since this movie will be an updated version, the story will contain a lot of twists and will, in fact, have vampires among the characters.
Before he takes on the Old Testament, Will will reprise his role as Agent J in “Men In Black 3,” which begins production this summer. The film is currently slated for a summer 2012 release.
Steven Spielberg and Will Smith may partner to adapt the ultraviolent Korean revenge flick Oldboy for American audiences. DreamWorks will produce, Universal will distribute and Smith will reportedly star as a man seeking payback after 15 years of kidnapped captivity.
Won’t be watching that one even with Will Smith starring.
Even Brad Pitt has parenting woes…
He revealed that Shiloh is in a stage right where she will only respond to the names John and Peter! Ha! Pax, on the other hand, wasn’t so funny a while back when Brad put him in timeout and he rebelled by peeing on the timeout chair.
What in the name of 90s one-hit-wonders is Blake Lively wearing?! The Gossip Girl starlet attended the celebration of the Juicy Couture 5th Avenue store opening in a backwards cardigan. Actually, upon further inspection, that looks like two backwards cardigans stuck together! Fashion like that makes me want to jump! jump! far, far away!
Two weeks before the film even hits theaters, Twilight shows have already sold out.
According to Fandango, Twilight is accounting for two-thirds of all ticket sales and more than 100 premiere screenings have already sold out. This bodes well for the teen vampire love story and its burgeoning franchise.
As rumored, Britney Spears joined Madonna on stage during her show at L.A.’s Dodgers Stadium on Thursday. Dressed in a white tuxedo-style shirt and black wide-leg trousers, Spears walked on stage at the end of Madonna’s tune “Human Nature,” singing the last verse. Pointing to Spears, Madonna then yelled, “She’s not your bitch!” Although Spears didn’t dance, Madonna spun around her, hugged her and kissed her hand.
She’s not yours either, Madonna.
Oh it is no secret that I love Will Smith. Don’t act surprised.
But what you might not have known is that “The Pursuit of Happyness” is set to come out on DVDVD on March 27, 2007. And you better believe I have it pre-ordered!
And sooner than that, “Stranger than Fiction” will be out on February 27, 2007. Ummm…yes…I pre-ordered that, too. Consider it a late Valentine gift to myself. And the “The Pursuit of Happyness” can be a late birthday gift to myself. See. That makes it all okay…haha…right?
