Braeden on Good Day Philadelphia talking about 3B: Brae’s Brown Bags

brae-good-day-philadelphiaFor those of you have been following the story about Braeden, my oldest son, and his project to help feed the hungry in our community, here is a video of his live segment on Fox News 29 Good Day Philadelphia yesterday morning.

Philadelphia News, Weather and Sports from WTXF FOX 29

Braeden did a really great job and as usual knocked the socks off everyone who talked with him. Even the lady who helped mic us and set us up at the table said she could take him home because he was so cute and so polite. Yes, yes he is, but no you cannot take him home with you.

Braeden spoke with Mike Jerrick and Sheinelle Jones all about his project. He told them how he came up with the idea and how it has grown already. We did some calculations regarding all the bags he has handed out with healthy snacks and water and we estimate it has been about 8,000 pounds of food already since handing out his first bag in July 2013.

We are all very proud of him and are happy Fox News 29 gave him a chance to spread the word. Hopefully more people will get involved and we can help an even bigger population of people who are hungry.

3B Brae’s Brown Bags Receives Grant

Of course since 3B: Brae’s Brown Bags is an important cause to me I absolutely have to share with you this amazing news.

Braeden Mannering, 10-year-old, has received a $500 grant from to go towards his Brae’s Brown Bags project.

This is very exciting news and you can read more about it on his blog.

Vote for Brae! Uncle Ben’s Cooking Program Contest

Braeden, age 9, is our aspiring chef. He has been wanting to cook in the kitchen even more so since he was the 2013 Healthy Lunchtime Challenge. This is the first time he has wanted to enter a contest which actually required that we video him cooking. The contest is through the Ben’s Beginners™ Cooking Program!

So I pulled out my trusty tripod and got to work. It took 2 hours of recording, stopping, recording, stopping, editing through the “ums” and the sounds of Amelia chatting or Finnegan sniffling, but eventually I was able to create a video which shows Brae cooking in the kitchen. The video had to be under 3 minutes and I think ours came in at 2:59 but that took A LOT of editing.

So click on this image to go watch Brae’s video and vote for him to win.

The winner’s receive $15K to use for Brae’s Brown Bags, their school receives $30K for a school cafeteria makeover and the winner gets to go to New York City to be on the Rachel Ray Show. I’m not going to lie when I told Braeden that part I’m pretty sure his eyes nearly popped out of his head. His response, “Serious? Are you being serious, Mom?” Yes. Yes, I am. What an amazing opportunity.

So this is my shameless plug for my son. If you are reading this post, please check out his video and vote for him. Each person can vote once per day. Public Voting Period is from 12:00 p.m. EDT on October 9, 2013 until 11:59 p.m. on October 27, 2013.

Thank you for your support!

Many of you might know that my 9-year-old son has his own blog. He started it initially to share his spooky stories. However since he won the 2013 Healthy Lunchtime Challenge, visited The White House to attend the Kids’ State Dinner and created his 3B: Brae’s Brown Bag project to help the homeless, he has been doing a lot more “real life” blogging. I’m super proud of him and want to encourage him to the fullest. However, I find it is now the time to talk about internet safety.

Right now he is of the age where I monitor everything he posts, Facebooks or Tweets. His project has a Facebook Page and we are both admins to it and we sit together to discuss what he would like to write. I’m hoping what I can teach him now about internet safety will carry over as he gets older and wants to have his own privacy. I’m really thankful for the Growing Up Online eBook because it is a helpful resource to help better explain all of this to a child.

Many of us have heard about or experienced “cyber-bullying.” We know the pain it can create. Far too often have we heard the stories of children being cyber-bullied who don’t know what to do or where to turn.

The More You Know Learning Series, in collaboration with NBC News, addresses this new and dangerous trend, in addition to other online issues, with the launch of Growing Up Online, the FREE eBook for parents to keep their kids safe on the Internet! You and your family can now be prepared, clued-up and openly communicative about online issues big or small!

Our kids have never known a world without the Internet. They’re spending more and more time on the web, so teaching them about using technology responsibly and safely is critical. Use the #GrowingUpOnline Blog App and download the free eBook for a chance to win a copy of THE LORAX on DVD & Blu-ray!

Download the FREE Growing Up Online eBook and be sure to watch all four entertaining comic book stories as a family. These stories show real situations that may occur when your kids go online.

Who knew Brooke Burke-Charvet was so mom smart!? #backtoschool

brookeNew popular video-based parenting site, Kids in the House has just added a fresh new video from Brooke Burke-Charvet, CEO of and Founder of online store

She begins her video by saying, “So, back to school mania. It’s crazy, and I’ve got it times four. So, the only way that I’m going to survive the chaos is to get really, super organized. So, I’ve got a bunch of different things that I do to help manage that crazy time.” I almost jumped ship when she was talking about being super organized because I try and I fail, miserably. But I kept watching and listening and her tips really do make sense, but more importantly they seem plausible. I think I can work with these ideas. :)

Burke-Charvet is among good company at Kids in the House, which features more than 8,000 videos from 450 experts. Many of the videos help parents cope with the anxiety of starting the new school year but the site has seen Burke-Charvet’s video receive an overwhelmingly positive response.

“Sometimes advice from a parent who has hard-earned wisdom to share can be the most helpful,” says Parenting Trend Expert and Founder of Kids in the House, Leana Greene. “Brooke Burke-Charvet gives great tips on how to get organized and make going back to school a drama-free event. As a mother of four, Brooke has personal experience to share on how difficult it is to make it all balance as a working mom.”
