Yellow Pages have gotten a facelift

ypprizepack‘Tis the season to get really excited about free stuff, right?

So this giveaway is from Yellow Pages. I don’t know if you’re like me but I rarely use the Yellow Pages in book form anymore because well I can more easily look it up online or on my phone. The folks at Yellow Pages know this is the fact of the matter and therefore they have created a brand new YPMobile app. The best part of the app is that now I can load it and find what I need instead of scrolling through the tiny search screen in a mobile web browser. But the YPMobile app does more than look up phone numbers for you, it also looks up directions and even gas prices. It also provides a platform to check out ratings of places which is useful.

As far as apps go it is currently very well received. Most apps end up getting destroyed in star ratings at the Apple Store but this app has received 4.5 stars!

Do not be fooled by your assumptions of Yellow Pages because they are definitely not the great big book we now let our kids sit on if they are too short. The YPMobile app and the YPMobile website are a one-stop useful tool and resource that are perfect to use, especially this holiday season when our brains are scattered and schedules are crazy.

You either love Harry Potter fully or only love the books or maybe you think it’s all just a bunch of hocus pocus (which would be tragic). I for one love both the books and the movies, although I will admit the movies left far too much out in terms of details, but most book to movies do. I absolutely love Hermione. She’s bloody brilliant and the character evolved nicely throughout the series. Ooooo did the Who’s down in Whoville have a Sousaphone Case?

sousaphonegallery__15580.1375980409.220.220You know all the crazy instruments in the Grinch that the Whos all play while strolling through the Whoville streets to celebrate? Haven’t you ever wondered where they put all those instruments while they are eating or wrapping presents? is there even an instrument case FOR a Seussaphone or rather a sousaphone ;)

My husband, the drummer turned guitarist who hangs all his guitars on our basement wall, he does have a guitar case, too. Although someone painted it with the faces of KISS band members so it’s not something you want to run into in the basement when it’s dark and you’re looking for the socks your toddler just threw down there.

So yes, there are instrument cases for the Whos down in Whoville. They are made with heavy gauge steel ball corners with plywood casing and a die cut foam inside to protect all their fancy music makers. Of course they also all have wheels because they can then ride on the cases while playing their tubas and trumpets and who-sa-whatzits! It will be a magical party, a fantastical holiday shindig and once it is time to sit down and fuel back up they can sit on those sturdy cases and chow down on their roast beast because the thick plastic laminate on the outside will protect the instruments on the inside while also making the instrument case easy to clean.

It’s perfect!

Fracking, atoms and nitrogen OH MY

To be perfectly honest with you I am NOT sure how this happened but somehow I answered 13 out of 13 question correct on a Science and Technology Knowledge Quiz from the Pew Research Center and Smithsonian magazine..

Somewhere along the line in all the “you are a girl and need to be in extra science and technology classes” throughout my education with the Appoquinimink School District it appears I must have been retaining information ;) Mr. Comegy’s should be proud.

The quiz can be found here. It is meant to test the general public’s knowledge of science and technology. I’m not sure if you can really do that with only 13 questions but it was still fun to actually know the answers.

You belong in South Carolina!

My cousin-in-law, Nikki, posted this quiz on her Facebook page and I was curious so I clicked through and tried it out.

The quiz, from science.time.com, asks you a series of questions to find out which of the United States your personality best fits.

The article is by Jeffrey Kluger and Chris Wilson, their research finds that West Virginia is the most neurotic state, Utah is the most agreeable and the folks of Wisconsin are the country’s most extroverted. According to the quiz, I belong in South Carolina. I think this is a good thing. I’ve never been to South Carolina but I hear really amazing things about the state.

Sounds like a trip should be planned ;)

Let me know which of the United States you match up with once you take the quick quiz.

Social platforms that provide career connectivity

Now see why didn’t this website exist back in the early 2000s when I was wandering aimlessly trying to figure out how to break into the design world or work in higher education with technology? Because it’s not so easy to make contacts when you’re fresh out of college and everyone thinks you don’t know what you are talking about. Having a site you can connect on and share your ideas opens so many new doors of possibilities.

Collegefeed is a new social platform and the brainchild of Silicon Valley veteran, Sanjeev Agrawal. Collegefeed acts like a personal career assistant to help students / new grads find their dream jobs, and earlier this summer secured funding from investors including Accel Partners and Mark Stevens. The platforms takes a new turn from the traditional network, as it is designed solely for new grads and is a way for them to brand themselves professionally for the first time using their college experience. Collegefeed offers tools that go beyond simply viewing a connection’s contacts or a university page, but puts students in front of a company–Facebook, Google, Go Daddy, and many others–that are looking to fill entry level positions.  Additionally, Collegefeed includes a Netflix-like recommendation engine that suggests companies and positions (and now fellow students) based on a person’s degree, interests and other factors.
